Spanish Peaks Volunteer Fire Department
INTRODUCTION
The Spanish Peaks Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated on May 26, 1970 by its' Charter Board of Directors, Dick Henderson, Harold Thompson, Walter Brunelli, Charles Brunelli, Dennis Feister, Sr., Barry West and June Valentine. Since those early days, we've had 16 Chiefs, added a station in Aguilar, remodeled the station in Gulnare, merged with Bon Carbo to form a Fire Protection District, and completely changed the face of firefighting in our protection area.
Today the Spanish Peaks Volunteer Fire Department, led by Chief Jason Catrambone, protects over 500 square miles in Las Animas County, Colorado. Our protection area includes the towns of Aguilar and Gulnare, plus numerous subdivisions. Our primary fire-related calls are for wildland fires. In addition to fire calls, we also handle public assists, cover more than 20 miles of Interstate 25, and our Quick Response Team answered 48 medical calls in 2011!
We are an all-volunteer fire department. Our volunteer firefighters are required to have 32 hours of training per year, and several volunteers have many more. In addition to regular monthly training, members attend other training opportunities offered by other departments, the State of Colorado, the Department of Homeland Security, and FEMA. In addition to waking up in the wee hours to answer calls when necessary, our dedicated volunteers spend many hours learning to more effectively protect our residents!
Our website offers a tremendous amount of information about our Volunteer Fire Department. Please browse the links on the left to learn about burn permits, volunteering with the Spanish Peaks Volunteer Fire Department, disaster preparedness, and more.
